Babylon is a markable name in the bible: genesis, the prophets an the revelation: the city seems to be the counterpart to the holy Jerusalem, the manifestion of evil. Destruction went out of Babel throughout history – over Israel, the Jews and the whole mankind. But God threatend the big city:
Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth. (Genesis 11:9)
A sword is upon the Chaldeans, saith the LORD, and upon the inhabitants of Babylon, and upon her princes, and upon her wise men. (Jeremia 50:35)
And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. (Revelation 18:2)
The monuments of Babylon were richly signed with the symbols of power and the gods.
Acoourding to the book of Genesis, Babel was founded by Nimrod which was a »mighty hunter before the LORD«. (Genesis 10:8-9). He could have been the initiator of the building of Babylon tower and the rebellion against God.
Several centuries later the famous Nebukadnezar reigned over Babylon. 587 BC he conquered Jerusalem, destroyed the temple of God and led the Jews into exile.
At last Saddam Hussein built palaces in Babylon, which lies appropriate 80 kilometers in the south of the Iraqi capital Bagdad. Hussein wanted to join the historical line of the powerful tyrans of Bablyon. And he also hated the Jews, as he shot rockets at Tel Aviv in 1991.
During the Iraqi war in 2003, the troops of USA and Poland conquered the old city. They wanted to protect the archaeological places, but shurely they endanger them with their helicopters, which are stationed there until today.
